Dental care for seniors
Many times, seniors need special dental care. Plaque may build up faster on your teeth if you have arthritis in your hands. Arthritis can make it hard for you to brush and floss. Ask for help with your oral hygiene. This will help you to keep your teeth in the best-possible condition.
Seniors may have the following health problems. If any of these issues affect you, speak with your dentist and ask for help.
Darkened teeth – Your teeth can darken as you age. Certain foods and drinks may cause more staining.
Dry mouth – Reduced saliva caused by medications may cause dry mouth. Radiation cancer treatments to the neck and head may cause dry mouth as well.
Lower sense of taste – As you get older, your sense of taste may lessen. Diseases, certain medications and dentures may also cause this loss.
Root decay – Tooth roots can be exposed as gum tissue recedes from your teeth as you age. Roots that have no enamel to protect them can decay quickly.
Uneven jawbone – If you lose teeth and do not replace them, your other teeth may move into other open spaces in your mouth. This may cause your jawbone to become uneven.
